How to build an equipment accounting system using RFID technologies?

Our company has expensive equipment that is used by various employees on the field (i.e. used on site). All this equipment is stored in one room. The task is to automate the accounting of the removal and entry of this equipment from (to) the premises (e).
There is a suggestion to do this using RFID tags, but ready-made solutions are either too expensive ( Motorola , ThingMagic Astra-EX ) or have too short range ( Tikitag ).
I planned to build the system as follows:
- install an RFID reader with a range of 1 m in the doorway;
- stick RFID tags on the equipment;
- In turn, connect the RFID reader to the computer so that you can track the movement of the equipment online from anywhere.
