How to build an application using phonegap?

I decided to make a mobile application on ionic, so how to build an ios and android application for testing on devices? For the build, I think to use phonegap. I'm not familiar with phonegap.

Why is the built-in tool not suitable (the same Cordova-build as phonegap)
$ ionic build ios
