How to beat system freezes when logging in and connecting VPN?

There is a problem with the system freezing when entering / unlocking - literally for 10-15 seconds, during which the laptop does not respond to either the touchpad or the keyboard.
I found information that this happens when the auto-join options for Wi-Fi networks are enabled - disabling this option for all saved networks did not help.
I noticed that friezes happen when VPN client is enabled - PrivateVPN. That is, I unlock the laptop, and until the VPN is connected, the system does not respond (it is possible that the connection is reversed, until the system hangs, the VPN does not connect, but it seems that without the VPN I did not notice friezes).

How can this be defeated?
