The free license has the Backup API disabled, so most normal backups won't be able to do anything.
But there are options, for example, there is a script on the Internet with which you can backup virtual machines (google specialized sites). Veam also has a product that allows you to make backups of SCP.
I don’t remember the exact names anymore, I used Symantec BackupExec myself, but ESXi was not free either.
PS: In general, BackupAPI is a handy thing. VMWare has utilities with which you can mount an ESXi storage disk to Windows (the storage must be accessible in Windows via SAN) and simply copy the VM snapshot files.
