How to avoid the risk of being ripped off by a freelancer?

I want to order the revision of the slider to a freelancer (I have not yet decided on which resource to look for it).
And how to do it, because if you transfer site data (passwords, ftp), then a freelancer can simply take the site for himself and forget about what you asked to do, including forgetting about you.
How to avoid this risk?

Look at the reviews and how much time on the site. If long and there are no negative reviews, there should be no problems

you should never pass on personal data to a third party. For a freelancer, in this case, it is better to create your own environment. (for example, a user with limited sudo on Unix), since this is a slider, the developer does not need to interact with the server at all (unless you know how to replace the existing implementation), so I think the easiest option for you would be a common git repository where your freelancer will make changes and you will pay =)

Make backups and trust professionals. Naturally, hosting should not be issued to Vasya Pupkin and tied to a mailbox.

Create a copy of your site with different passwords without important information, resources in a special subdomain, for example dev.site.ru. Provide data for access to the resources of this subdomain to the performer, and then change the passwords, copy the upgraded parts, or files to the main site. Work only with post-payment or advance payments.

1) do not pay up front
2) do not give access to the site
