How to automate the receipt of passport data?

There is a task to put registration points in stores. The user approaches and enters his passport and contact details. But very often users make a large number of mistakes. To avoid this, it was decided to somehow automate this process.
There are 2 options to purchase nfc readers and receive data by presenting a passport. We tried to count from the phone through the application, nothing happened. In fact, I'm not even sure that there is a chip in there.
Is there really a chip there and can the data be read like that?
The second option is to read the 2 lower bands at the bottom of the front page and identify them. But I'm not sure if it is possible to get all the passport information from these data? (cameras will be at registration points)
