How to assemble a modern AV receiver?

Tell me what options exist to assemble a modern audio combine.
What is the point - there is a good amplifier and acoustics. We now need to put some kind of "box" that will hawk music from various sources (flash drive, network, from mobile phones without a wired connection) and turn it into a decent signal for the amplifier. I'm not strong in the subject, so perhaps I can not correctly formulate my question about the box in Google. So far, of the options that I have found
- an AV receiver / AV processors - stand like an airplane and already have their own amp on board. Modern wireless technologies support only the coolest=expensive ones. Firstly, the high cost bothers me, and secondly, the boxed solution (if something comes up, you won’t use it separately).
- an external sound card (more expensive, not China for $ 4) but it needs the player itself (the same Raspberry PI can be used as a media center)
- media centers like apple tv / Chinese android player - but so far this option has not really figured out what they are know how and how expedient to use them purely for audio.
- use a stupidly old laptop :))) (an old-fashioned version as a last resort)
I would be grateful if you share links to some reviews, articles or your own experience.
The common sense is to build a modern, compact, modular sound processor.
