How to apply a gradient?

Hello. I rarely use illustrator.
How to apply a gradient "on all one"? i.e. one gradient on all layers and sublayers.
How am I doing?
I select the layer, click on the gradient tool, select the gradient I want, and it's applied. But there is one thing, it is applied to every element inside the layer. I want one gradient for all. How to do it?

Maybe I'm doing it wrong at all, but the lessons say select objects, click on the gradient tool and, as it were, set colors in the settings. This is how it doesn't work for me at all. You have to choose any template, then set the current colors.
