How to add exclusion folder to gitignore?

There is a folder structure like this

public
controllers/public
routes/public

I need to add ONLY the folder to the git exceptions . public
The problem is that by adding the git to the gitignoreline it stops tracking and PS : I almost FUCKED now to click the mouse when choosing tags. Toaster, have a conscience, turn on the markdown. Otherwise, let's make it up. publiccontrollers/publicroutes/public
