What is the correct directory to put a page in GitHubPages?

I decided to use GitHub Pages as a host for a static page. When creating the repository, I threw the page as is into the repository, the browser went to it at [username].github.io, but it did not want to be updated when I committed the repository. I read what needs to be put in the gh-pages directory, as a result, it began to be updated, but the site address changed to [username].github.io. Actually the question is how to do it right so that the page is updated and addressed as [username].github.io?

and there is some heresy in the question:

[username].github.io == [username].github.io, what's the question then?? (but I suspect that in the second case, not [username], but [projectname] came out and you need to read the link from my answer above)
