How to add Edittext to Actionbar?

Good evening.
I have a question, how can I add Edittext (and other elements) to the Actionbar, more precisely, how to display my own markup in it? I searched, found two non-working instructions, the application does not work (most likely due to incompatibility with AppCompat).

Use Toolbar instead of the old actionbar. You can place items in it like any other container.
