How many VCPU to choose for proxmox server?

there is a server with two Xeon E5620 CPUs. as far as I understand it has 4 cores, 8 threads
when I create a VM in proxmox, what should I choose in my case?

if I have 2 sockets (2 physical processors), and 8 cores each, should I indicate
2 sockets 16 cores? But in such case VM says
Error: MAX 8 vcpus allowed per VM on this node

core by number on the server i.e. 8
