How long has a wildcard certificate been protecting 2nd level domains?

Actually the other day I found a line

When ordering a certificate for the *.domain.com domain, the certificate will protect the second-level domain domain.com.

I clearly remember that in 2017 there was no such generosity.

Is the certificate paid or free? Which CA?

It has always been like this (well, maybe except for the most stunned CAs) - the certificate applies to the domain itself and all subdomains.
