How is viewing photos in full screen mode implemented in applications such as VK, twitter, etc.?

What is the structure of the ViewController for the full screen image view scene (image gallery)? Like, is it something like a regular VC with a UICollectionView? If so, how is the smooth rotation of cells organized when changing orientation? Do you have examples (or links to examples) where this would be implemented?
