How is the process of developing/improving a site with a freelance layout designer?

Hello. I finished courses on layout and I want to find a job, along the way doing small tasks on freelance. The question arose: how does the client transfer the materials to the contractor to work on the site? In the courses, I made changes to the directory with the site through the GitHub repository. But, as I understand it, clients are unlikely to host their sites on Github. How can I work with a directory? Maybe clients prefer to drop the folder with the directory in the mail? Or do they immediately give some access to the server where the site is located? I don't want to embarrass myself in front of the very first customer, not knowing how the process is going.

If we are talking about improvements, then access to ftp and / or the site admin panel is provided. You have the right to demand all the necessary access yourself, but you will have to justify why you need it if the customer suddenly asks.
When laying out a new site, you also determine what you need. If it’s just layout, then you do it at home, exactly as you like, then send it to the customer in the mail as an archive, or upload it to a private turnip and transfer it to him.
In general, everything is varied.

When it comes to obtaining access, I recommend asking the customer to make you a separate temporary account. At the end of the work, be sure to remind him to delete this account. Or changed passwords if he gave basic access. So you protect yourself from raids "My site is broken, but you had access."

Stupidity is when you do not know and do not want to ask the client how to do it right and how to do it, i.e. be silent and do not understand what and how. No one will consider you somehow stupid or stupid if you ask how it is right and do it right. Everything is different, if the clients are "well, I once gave a money to a person, he did everything to me, I don't know what and how it is...", but there are clients who themselves are the same developers / designers / studios that keep projects on git or FTP, it’s better to ask everyone individually how to access the files and how it’s better to return them later, just threw a compressed ZIP or immediately upload it to the server.

Always different. Basically, freelancing improvements are, of course, ready-made sites, and ready-made sites usually lie on FTP or give access to the admin panel to upload files.
The main thing - do not forget to make backups of the initial state, so as not to shoot yourself in the foot later. There were many moments when it was backups that saved.
Someone asks to send an archive by mail or in a chat and upload it themselves, but you need to be able to work with the simplest FTP clients.
