How is the procedure for requesting domain keys from a customer?

I received my first freelance order for a small alteration of an already finished site, I rummage around in html & css and js, but I have no idea how I can go to the customer's domain to download files that need to be edited and then how to return everything to the customer. Perhaps my question will seem very naive, but I am not familiar with this procedure at all, please help)
