How is the backend of mobile applications arranged?

There is an application that works with a local database and also performs some calculations, I want this to happen on the server, and send the results to the application, via json for example.
What are the typical practices?
I worked with the server only as part of writing simple sites, threw in html + css + js and that's it.

I use parse.com wherever possible, for most tasks it fits perfectly.
