How is an SSH tunnel more secure than just SSH?

Read here:

Many of you probably use SSH to connect to remote servers in your daily work. But not many people know that with the help of SSH we can create secure connections (tunnels) through which traffic will be transmitted in encrypted form.

Che then fell into a stupor, and if without a tunnel, just connect putty to a server and rummage around there, isn't it protected?
(yes, I'm new to ssh, but I hope to understand everything through reading / chatting)

A simple SSH connection is just a protocol for special tools - terminal, file transfer.
And the tunnel is suitable for any software , the protocol does not matter - even send mail through it, even a browser (see sites).
It has nothing to do with the degree of protection.
