How easy is it to upload Arduino sketches to GitHub?

Actually, I'm just learning both git and arduino ide (which, it feels like a stupid notepad with the ability to download to the controller). I don't quite understand how it's easier to work with sketch versions. Is it possible to make commits to your repository from under the Arduino IDE, or is it worth developing in something else, and uploading the sketches manually to the controller?
