How does Windows 7 check for Internet connectivity?

Interested in what mechanism is used to check the connection with the Internet. As I understand it, after a repeating, specified repetition time interval, one of the actions occurs:
1. ping the provider's DNS address.
2. ping any address on the Internet.
3. exchange requests with Microsoft servers.
....
Or is everything much simpler?

There are many different methods for determining network capabilities in NCSI, one of which is determining the ability to access the Internet. The check is carried out in two stages:
• When connected to the network, the system sends an HTTP request to www.msftncsi.com/ncsi.txt. This is a plain text file containing just one line of Microsoft NCSI. In case of a successful request, the server should return a response with a 200 OK header containing this line;
• The second step checks that the DNS service is up and running by trying to resolve the dns.msftncsi.com name to the IP address. Expected value 131.107.255.255

but in general yes - google yourself will be faster
