Google about "flex memory mode"
For example, Intel has a page: Single -channel and multi-channel memory modes
Briefly: if for example one is 2GB and the second is 4GB, then 2 + 2 will work in dual-channel, and the remaining volume (2 out of 4x) will be in single channel mode. It strongly depends on the motherboard model, some have quite a lot of settings right in the BIOS, and they warn about FLEX at startup with a corresponding message on the screen.
This mode works slower than dual-channel.
