How does Periscope work?

Good day! I would like to know how Periscope works. And in which direction to dig? Are there any examples or lessons?!
As I understand it, this is HLS broadcasting. Roughly dug into this topic, they say you can stir it up with ffmpeg. But I still can’t figure out how to connect this whole thing with a mobile phone ...
And one more question, off topic of course, is it possible to use Nginx without Apache? That is, to keep the server only on Nginx, there will be PHP and Mysql. It was just the case, once I installed Apache on the server, and when there were > 50 users online on the site, the server severely slowed down. Then the support team said that we need to link Apache + Nginx + mod_php, so I did it, it seems to be fine. But still, I want to get rid of this bunch, what would you advise?

Not only possible, but even highly desirable. The nginx + php5-fpm bundle consumes less memory and is generally faster than Apache + Nginx + mod_php.
