How does line spacing depend on line length?
Good afternoon.
I am developing a responsive website design, and the question arose, what rules determine the dependence of leading on line length? I do not want the solution to be "by eye", because in the future, this question will arise again and again, so I would like the solution to have a mathematical basis.
I would be grateful for advice and links to third-party resources.
Thank you!

The line spacing rather depends on the volume of the text, that is, on the number of lines. A simple example: screwing a double spacing into a paragraph of three lines is stupid, but if the text itself is long, then it's very ok.
In general, it is difficult to automate this, since the font itself, that is, the pattern of letters, plays a big role. They can be very roughly divided into two types: (a) fonts in which uppercase is much higher than lowercase (and lowercase has long descenders) and (b) all the rest. They will have different leading settings; the former do not require particularly large values, and their font size can be significantly smaller (strong contrast between letters improves their readability).
Also, it would be good to take into account not only the text settings, but also its remoteness from the rest of the environment. Often, this is hammered into a bolt, breaking visual connections, and although the text is tolerably typed, but in the context of the page, the harmony is destroyed.
But if you find a way to automate the calculations - please let me know)
