How does a proxy work with https traffic?

In general, I'm interested in how the proxy works on https sites, specifically at the moment of establishing a connection and exchanging keys. Can a proxy server intercept the keys and decrypt all my traffic or not, and how does it work in general?

The proxy cannot intercept anything unless you install certificates from the proxy.
