How do young startups retain copyright on their ideas?
How can this be done while living in the Russian Federation?

Think with your Head : patent the functionality and application of the implementation, nothing else. You can't patent an idea.

Agree with the rest. Ideas cannot be patented.
The only worthy option to protect the idea is to REALIZE :)
However. The idea can be protected from disclosure. For example, when two companies that have know-how (one of them or both) and they want to protect this know-how, they sign an NDA (Non Disclosure Agreement) or Non-Disclosure Agreement.
Of course, this does not work 100% in Russian jurisdiction. But as a restrictive tool it works quite well.
Perhaps this is the only thing that can be done :)

It all depends on how your idea is presented.
There are a number of measures that, of course, will not be able to protect you 100% (such is our legislation), but you will be more or less calm.
1. This invention is a patent.
2. This is a code / website / design / logo - notarization / trademark registration
3. This is something ephemeral - wait a bit, we are working on it as part of the service.
As already mentioned above, there are various non-disclosure agreements, confidentiality, etc., but they are for a certain circle of people, and if there is a lot of them to understand who "leaked" it will be practically impossible.
It is often answered here that your idea, if it is not supported by anything, is of no use to anyone. This is partly true, but the only risk, in my opinion, may be that your idea is implemented by someone else and faster than you.
So, either quietly cut yourself, or not hide and gather a team.
In essence the question: "So far - no way :("

Ideas are not unique, someone else can come up with your idea quite independently.
The main advantage of the former is the time advantage, you are the first to introduce new chips, you set the tone for the market, and so on.
The copyist is always one step behind, but as soon as you relax, he will devour you.

1. Ideas are not patented worldwide.
2. An idea is worthless. It's just the implementation of the idea.
3. Only specific models can be protected.
4. They simply work better than the competition. At least copiers have a significant problem - a large time lag. Need to use this.
