How do you choose open-source projects to participate in development?

I often wander around the open source project sites and try to find something new to join. The main goal is to gain experience in solving new tasks for yourself, in addition: to study the written code for the purpose of self-development. :)
The problem is that with the selection of candidates, difficulties of a different nature constantly arise. Are there fellow tribesmen in misfortune here? How do you solve this problem? :)

There is some product (here, of course, we are talking about OpenSource), which I use. But there is no feature in it, or, say, you want to automate something. This is a great opportunity to correct the source code.

I participate only in what I myself use. The more useful the project is, the more pleasant it is to do something useful for it.
By the way, you don't have to be a good programmer/designer to help a project. The minimum program that can be used to support the project is to periodically visit the forum and answer questions.
