How do you account for the switching of network elements?

Good afternoon.
Interested in how your company organizes accounting for switching ports of network devices, patch panels, sockets.
Do you use any specialized software, or do you keep records in an excel file, or do you not keep records at all?
Also interested in the size of the network that you administer.

Some specialized information systems are needed when many departments work with the same documents. These systems are called accounting and inventory systems. As a rule, they adapt to the business process of the organization, so they are always finalized to meet the needs of suppliers.
If three engineers work (and if you have 4K users, then this is a maximum of 200 switches), then excel files for the eyes. As a rule, all inventory systems are quite complex and non-intuitive, investing time in studying them and migrating data to them with such a small network is not particularly justified.
From the free one you can see nocproject . I really don't know what it will do.

Try GLPI.
You can keep records not only by sockets, locations and equipment ports.

I just route the cables beautifully in the patch panel and sign them, the stickers are everything.
I don’t understand why keep in mind or somehow fix this kind of information.

I have racktables in active use. But I have a huge network with a great geographical distance. The data is transported and processed in a variety of ways: voice streams (E1 or STM strasse or STM pack), a lot of ethernet, compression is widely used (DWDM, CWDM). High load on the network and extremely high criticality of failures and downtime. Therefore, critical nodes and pieces of the network are additionally documented using visio and excel. Moreover, for one node there can be a dozen schemes in visio and a volume of excel tables in 20. It is not possible to keep so much in your head. Returning after an arbitrarily long period of time, you need to figure it out in a matter of minutes. And the price of a mistake is very serious.
