How do the "Expand" "Expand Appearance" and "Outline Stroke" options differ from each other?

It is also interesting how they differ when it comes to disassembling the rim and why in this case the Expand option is not available while the other two are available?

Expand Appearance allows you to expand fills or strokes into different paths in layers, in this example I have expanded 4 gradient fills applied to one path into 4 paths with one gradient fill per 1 path.
