How do programs like OutLook work?

I wonder how such mail programs work? Ie, entered any e-mail, login, password - and voila, all incoming, sent and others. Is there any general algorithm for getting all this from any mailer (mail.ru, gmail.com, rambler, yandex, or at least 10minutemail)?
