How do online emulators work for different devices?

There are many different services:
Browserstack for testing sites on different devices
Litmus For testing email on different devices.
I'm wondering how they work?
Do the owners of these services have a bunch of different devices (Android, mac, ios) in their hands and they somehow emulate them on our screen? Or is it done with some software?

Most likely these are emulators like Bluestacks, only much lighter
