How do I keep my license when upgrading to Windows 10 from scratch?

Microsoft promised a free upgrade for win 7-8 users. I have licensed Windows 8.1. It will be possible to simply keep the license by updating through Windows Update. But how do I keep the license if I want to install the system from scratch by formatting the drive? I guess the 8 key won't work. And reinstalling Windows 8 from scratch, and then upgrading to dozens, is, in my opinion, overkill.

Make an image of the system disk with Acronis or Windows tools. If necessary, return to the same state with the same license.
