How do hosting providers register domain names (where do they get them)?

Can I somehow register a domain without participation of hosting providers? How it's done?

You can become a registrar - for this you apply to the coordination center of the zone.
You can have your own zone - for this, contact ICANN
. How is it done? Expensive, long, in English, with a good knowledge of the legal side of the process :)
