How dangerous is it to connect a home PC to the Internet directly (without a router)?

I remember that before wifi came into my life tightly, my home PC was connected to the Internet directly through pppoe. Now the question arose in my head: what is safer? A home station connected to the Internet directly or through a budget link? Without considering the option when the admin panel with the phone is available on the long line using a standard login / password

The difference may be in connections initiated from outside.
That. with default configs, it's safer to sit at the router, tk. it cuts off some potential attacks.
If the user is experienced, he is able to swing the situation. And in any direction)

Routers often have outdated firmware and therefore security holes. All sorts of bots constantly scan devices open on the Internet and try to exploit them. It makes sense to change the firmware to some open one, with updates.
An additional router makes sense in that it takes over the hardware load when scanning by bots.
Security is a general concept. Data safety is ensured by the OS itself and by various measures.

Windows XP or 2000 sobers up well, suddenly starting to overload endlessly
with 10 such tricks have become complicated, because "you can not be afraid"
again, an advanced user makes backups
or "already does"

Home station connected via Mikrotik. Or via linux. Through kinetics, at worst (very thin, for example, mosquito :)).
