How can you programmatically edit text and an image in Photoshop?

I have a template pdf file in which I need to programmatically replace an image and some text. I have tried GIMP and editing text directly by changing the text in the psd file. Editing the text didn't change anything, the text is old, and GIMP doesn't see this psd file correctly. Photoshop scripting is also not an option because my server is running on linux.

It seems to me that it would be better to use ImageMagick, if I understand you correctly.
