Take for example a regular wifi router and a few laptops.
A Wifi router has one external ip address and at the same time it is a dhcp server, i.e. the router always knows how many devices are connected to it and what their local addresses + mac address are. At the time of a request from one of the computers to the global network, the ip + mac address of the computer that made the request is placed in the request packet. At the time of the response, the packet also stores the ip + mac of the computer to whom this packet should be sent, and the router simply redirects the packet to the desired laptop.
With a vps server, it's a little more complicated, but the principle is the same.
