How are names resolved in the home locale?

My home LAN consists of a D-Link DIR-615 router based on Linux and several GNU / Linux machines, the addresses are issued by the DHCP server on the router. How are hostnames resolved on such a network? As I understand it, in windows networks, names can be resolved using NetBIOS. Does dhcp resolve names on a Linux network, or do Linux machines have a protocol to replace NetBIOS? (samba is not used).

On Linux and mixed networks, addresses can be entered into DNS by a DHCP server.
