How are ip addresses assigned for multicast?

You need to implement multicast for a network test. PIM+IGMPv2.
There is a traffic source and a client in different networks.
Do I understand correctly that the server from the 239.255.xx network sends broadcast packets to the network (vlan).
Does the client initiate a request to the nearest router, which adds it to the group and starts forwarding packets to the port towards the client?
