How are element selectors selected in testing?

Hello.
Please tell me what is the common practice when writing autotests for web applications, namely when choosing selectors of the necessary elements.
Let's say with the help of selenium it is necessary to check that the button is pressed (conditionally). You need a selector for this button. Should any special classes or attributes be set to test this button? After all, otherwise it will be hell to look for its position on the page, there can be a bunch of buttons inside one div and their order can be reversed at any time!

You can agree with the virgins and hang an additional date attribute on the buttons that will be used for addressing. But this is a difficult organizational work - you need to be able to achieve your own)
