How much worse will the download speed be for US customers if the hosting is in Europe?

It is not entirely clear why to take hosting in Europe if the site is designed for users in the US.
Where is the logic?
Then it may slightly, but affect search results, especially for competitive geo-dependent key queries.

But why not do better and host in the US? Or, if the fact is that you already have a server in Europe - just connect Cloudflare and it will be great.
