How a VPN works

For a very long time I struggled with setting up a VPN (I did it because of some paranoia + they are not afraid to sit from a common wi-fi). Finally implemented (with the help of Tomato and Viscosity firmware on a macbook), but questions remained. Honestly tried to google - could not find the necessary information.

1. I was told that if you put a VPN on a router, then samba balls that are in the local network of this router will be available. Fig, nothing is available. I'm sitting at work now, only those balls that are in the working local network are available. Where to dig?

2.If I am connected to public wifi in some cafe thread, or to someone else's local network (also via wifi), but connected to a VPN and in the Viscosity settings set to send all traffic through the VPN, then I can no longer worry that I will be sniffed traffic? Already a couple of times they took away passwords from various services via wifi, although I didn’t use VPN then.

3. In my home local network I have a small server with an internal ip 192.168.1.14. How can I connect to it if I am connected to a public network (and there is already a machine with such an internal ip), but the VPN connection has started? Well, it would be useful to connect to the router, to the web-muzzle.

4. Previously, I created an ssh tunnel to the router if connected to a public wi-fi. When checking ip (checked just by going here, there is a simple php script) my home external ip was displayed. Now, when checking ip, if I connect via VPN, the external ip of the wifi point to which I connected is displayed. Is that how it should be?
ADF: my home ip is now displayed, although I myself am at work. Looks like I did something wrong before, but now everything is ok)

Why don't you use inexpensive services that VPNs provide? For example, http://hideme.ru/, 1000 rubles a year, 300 rubles for a month, 1700 for two years or 30 rubles for a day. I used it, you turn on the program, choose the country and the server. And everywhere you sit as if from the chosen country.

1|3: Set your home network to a different addressing. For example, 192.168.2.X
In my opinion, this is the easiest option =)
2: forced encryption of traffic in the vpn channel, then it will be pointless to intercept.
