Promote the main page of the site, or make links to internal pages on it and promote them? And close the main one. Is this normal practice?

Definitely not - do not close. The home page is the page that has the highest static weight. Close it from indexing - there will be trouble. It transfers the most static weight to internal pages. In general, it all depends on what kind of site you have and what semantic core. Some pages are optimized for one query cluster, another for others.
