Home NAS - how to watch movies remotely?

There is a home NAS - NetGear Stora MS 2000.
It is connected and works as a home FTP server (file storage) through a TP Link W8951 router-modem.
Question - how to watch movies (listen to music) hosted on this NAS from under Linux \ OSX on the local network? Downloading a movie from a NAS to a laptop "for watching at a time" is somehow tedious and wrong, as it seems to me.
As far as I know, the VLC player can do this, but I did not figure out how to set it up.

Thank you all for your help.
The solution is found - it's XBMC. I'll stop there for now.
Removed VLC, because it's really buggy when working with DLNA - the server sees it, but it doesn't read the files on this server. XBMC handles this task as if the files were on the local HDD rather than on the remote server - almost instantly.
MiniDLNA is installed on the Stora MS 2000 server, which starts automatically when the server starts, so there are no problems at all from this side.
As a result, the whole problem boiled down to two points:
- understand what DLNA is and everything connected with it
- find a working dlna player under Linux
Thank you all for your help! ))

Look in the direction of Plex - a very powerful thing, it allows you not only to watch remotely, but also to change the bitrate on the fly, it is convenient to organize the library. There are clients for almost all platforms, including TVs. There is a paid version with even more features, but the free one is enough...
