History of chat messages, how to implement it correctly?

Good afternoon. I am writing now a small network chat client based on vk api, as a training. There was a problem how to correctly display the history of correspondence.
Looked in Google, many implement through listbox. But I don't like it :) I want both components on the form to be textbox or richtextbox.
How then to fill the textbox with history? As an option, I want to try first writing the story to a text file, then put it into a textbox from it. Then I will have a local copy of the correspondence and it seems to solve my problem, but maybe someone else will advise something. I will be very glad.
