High ping when accessing the server?

I organized an openvpn server running on 1194, forwarded port (via iptables) 25565 to the client (so that the server on the client's machine was visible on the external network). Now, when you connect to this server, minecraft starts to rise and jump ping (to the ip of the openvpn server) and, accordingly, the server lags when connecting via the ip of the openvpn server. What reasons can be and how to identify which one? On the openvpn server, mtu eth0 = 1372. I will

Do you think that ping jumps to a VPN server somehow depend on the presence of this server itself? Unlikely.
