"Heavy" graphic sites - monsters of the past or image?

Are there areas where excessive graphic overload of sites is appropriate?

I would like to see examples of such sites. The fact is that I have a ready-made project that without graphics will not create the right atmosphere. But the main thing is that the idea is fully visible only at high resolutions (1440-1900), but everything is loaded anyway ...

It seems to me that the best design is minimalistic. For example, I really like the design of the habr. And I believe that it is not necessary to load pages.

I love beautiful graphic sites.
The main thing is that:
a) they work smartly, otherwise presentability from the fact that you wait 3 seconds until the band reaches 100% is not ice.
b) Were adequate to the topic.
That is, if I see a graphically overloaded site of a musician, artist, web studio, everything is ok. But if this is an online bank, then I’ll twist it at my temple.

fully sees the idea only at high resolutions (1440-1900)
Isn't the idea too small? :)

for starters, you can try to simply optimize the pictures, at least. e.g. background , three and a half times.
add caching headers, otherwise all content will be loaded completely every time. but in general, install the YSlow
extension for the fox, you will see a lot of useful things there.
