Software testing
Bogdan Kiriy, 2020-04-21 23:42:40

Guys, such a question, I have never been in the IT sphere, but I have already read a lot about testing games and software, I really want to get into this area, how to get into it?

Hello everyone, I’m 22 years old, I’m studying at a medical university and I understand that this is not what I wanted ... I
started to surf the Internet, watched a lot of interviews with people from IT and, following the advice, I realized that testing is the best start without experience.
I read a lot of literature on testing, sat on webinars and constantly took some trainings and demo courses.
I tried to work for the indie company PinkHead games, I was a tester there, but something didn’t really work out, either I didn’t understand something, or the developer gave the wrong instructions, right now the project is already in the incentive - "Defentures", but everything died out on this ...
I played a lot of games, but I seem to have played enough, now I want to participate in this process, creating a game. But here's how to join this area, so that you would be noticed and accepted for this position, I have no idea where to start.
Tell me, help as they say!

"Read-look" is preparation for study and not for work.
The most important point in your post is what you did in this indie firm. Your answer is "nothing". That is, you ruined your first moment of real study.
Therefore, you can work now "no way."
And you don’t even know why and the impression that it’s not very interesting. And this is much more important than how many vidos you watched.
Think about what you can do so that you have some kind of answer to the question "what can you do" other than "nothing"?
Then again look for where to get skills and try not to screw up this attempt as well as the first.

Until you create a game yourself, no one will be interested in you.
I advise you to start by learning Unity.
1. First - just review the tool without diving into the code.
2. Then - master the C# programming language at least at a minimal level.
3. All video tutorials on Unity - watch only on the official website and learn only from them.

Create a resume on headhunter and send it to all companies where no experience is required. If something is now a pandemic and testers have been cut first because there is a benefit from them, but not so great compared to the risks for most businesses

To get started, try personally (without outside help) to find a hitherto unknown glitch or vulnerability in some popular software and publish a message about it before professional testers report it . This achievement of yours will look very advantageous on your resume.

Get a job as a tester in any company, not necessarily for testing games. Ideally, in a large enterprise, where it is difficult, where there is test automation. Work there, and then look for game testing.
There are so many gamers queuing up in game testing right now that vacancies often go their separate ways.

First, decide what you really need.

about advice I realized that testing is the best start without experience

This is absolutely not true. If, by analogy, who finds it easier to become a surgeon in a hospital, a veterinarian or a trained surgeon? Wherever you want to go, you have to go.
Testers are also different. As I understand it, you want to do manual testing just like a regular user and look for jambs? This is the most bottom and low-paid option. Even a schoolboy can cope with such work, who want a lot and, as a result, the competition of norms, shit.
Qa tester is of course more interesting. But this is not for you to play with toys. And as others have said, the Enterprise will be easier to get started with. But it needs to be learned and worked on.

We go to Google and look for 100 gaming companies, in each we write what you want to work, in general, people with a desire to work are valued, but desire alone is not enough, you need the person’s words not to disagree with actions, so show people at the other end how much you want to work and what ready to do it. Be sure to indicate that you worked at PinkHead, but with no result and are ready to try again.
The funnel is:
100 companies | 10 will answer | 3 will be called for an interview | 1 hire
Maybe this:
50 companies | 10 will answer | 2 will be called for an interview | 1 will hire
And such:
0 companies | 0 will answer | 0 will be called for an interview | 0 will hire
It all depends on your actions.
When you write to a company, you are already making money.
For example, after hiring, you will receive a conditional 10,000 rubles. per month.
With this funnel:
100 companies | 10 will answer | 3 will be called for an interview | 1 will hire
Each written answer to any company will bring you 10,000 / 100 = 100 rubles, even if you do not get an answer.
This is for your motivation.

Your question boils down to

Show me where to go so as not to work and get money

Firstly, you need to think very carefully and understand whether testing is true, this time, "it": manual testers without qualifications are the very bottom of the market, where it is endlessly boring and difficult to work for little money, fatigue and disappointment will come very quickly
. secondly, gamedev sounds cool and interesting, but, especially for the first experience, I would not limit the market for myself so much - it’s not so important, for a start, it’s gamedev or something else, then, with experience, you can already try to choose
There is a crowd of enthusiastic newbies rushing into gamedev, who think that if they like to play, then it will be fun to develop or even test, it doesn’t work quite like that, and the market is oversaturated
Thirdly, you should not ask questions, but go to work, really find at least something on hh for little money, for starters, it’s not so difficult, you don’t even need to send anything to anyone, as they advise, most likely, with a low a price tag and a full-time job will find you by itself (adjusted for a pandemic, now, of course, everything is complicated)
