Got a phone number from Instagram?

Good evening!
Chatted with a man on instagram and he said he could figure out my location. After about 10 minutes, a lot of SMS began to come from different services with confirmation codes. Then the person sends my passport data (thank God the old passport). Can you tell me how it was done? And is there any way to protect yourself from this?
