Google Chrome eats memory, why?

Google Chrome steadily eats up 30-40 kb of RAM per second (exactly the process that is highlighted in the screenshot), the tabs are not updated. There are literally 13 tabs open. As I understand it, more than two gigabytes of memory is allocated for Google Chrome itself and not for one tab. This is fine?
