Give me some advice on SSD drives

I'm thinking of buying a ~100 gig SSD for the system. Several points of interest:

  • Is it worth it? (according to the tests, the performance increase is huge, but still...)
  • Is it worth it to put both the system and all applications on the disk, or leave only the system, and run applications from the HDD?
  • How durable are they now with normal everyday use?
  • Which brand of disk is better to take?

I understand that some questions may seem naive, but before that I had never dealt with SSD drives.

I answer in order, this is of course my personal opinion:

  • Costs.
  • Better system and apps. If there is still an HDD, you can transfer frequently overwritten data to it that does not require quick access, and otherwise use it as a file storage.
  • There are different opinions about this, personally I have had OCZ Vertex 3 for more than a year - not a single problem.
  • The taste and color. I took OCZ Vertex 3, now it's more logical to take the next generation. Chose by the price / speed ratio and a small number of negative reviews. Intel and crucial also considered, there were good models, but in the end I chose OCZ.

I will add that it is important to optimize the system for SSD - make sure that there are no unnecessary disk operations (in the case of Windows, for example, you can disable Prefetch, Superfetch, Indexing Service, Hibernate).
PS Personally, I'm not particularly worried about data loss - documents in Dropbox, sources in the version control system, and rearranging the system in case of a serious failure is not very long.
At one time I tried, transferring temporary folders to RAMDisk / HDD, etc., in the end I refused - the SSD is still for comfortable work, and not to create additional difficulties :)

I have had a ssd (intel crucial) for a year and a half, it lives and is fast. The system and software on it, everything for a quick start. I don’t save important documents on it, and it’s easy to reinstall programs if something happens. Whether they are durable - I can’t say, but even if it works for 2 years, it’s worth it IMHO: a full upgrade did not increase my speed like ssd.

1. Worth it. The growth is amazing.
2. Both the system and applications.
3. Live for at least 5 years.
4. I have a Crucial M4 64GB

1) Definitely worth it, I installed and saw the light, now I can’t work on systems with HDD without tears
2) Both the system and applications
3) ???
4) IMHO intel

Costs. Even 256 is better. I took OCZ a couple of years ago (praised for speed). Nothing broke, the increase in performance is huge, in addition, it does not make noise. Enough space for applications. I keep media content on external network storage.

in the main computer OCZ Vertex 2 60gb, soon 2 years old, it is used for the system and home (and this and that is backed up on the raid from the screws). Plus, my wife has had a MacBook Air 2010 for a year and a half. In both cases, the performance increase is many times over compared to conventional drives. The greatest increase in speed is precisely in the launch of the system / applications, therefore, all this is definitely needed on ssd.

1. I fully support the previous speakers: the machine flies into space compared to the HDD.
2. In the same way - the system and applications cost
3. How long it will live depends on the case. Two OCZs (Revo Drive and Vertex2) have been working for me for at least a year, a friend's 3 pieces in a row flew out during the week, including the Intel 320 - they were replaced without question.
4. From my experience - OCZ Revo does not work with all motherboards. Corsair Force GT on SATA3 did not work on a laptop with SATA2 - it fell into BSOD five times per hour, I had to return OCZ Vertex2 back.

I have two SSD drives in my laptop, one for the system and applications - 128 GB, the second for files, music, movies, torrents, etc. - 256 GB, the flight has been normal for more than a year, I don’t know why people are still have been stressing over this.
PS in the server on a non-figuring load there are two SSDs in RAID-1 for 3 years already, or even more, and at least henna. Tasks - storage and distribution of files.

When buying an SSD, I advise you to pay attention to the presence of TRIM , which should increase the life of the media. But at the same time, you should not forget that not all operating systems support this functionality. Here is a list of OSes with support for the TRIM command .
If, nevertheless, you are afraid to take a pure SSD, then you can look towards hybrid products. For example Seagate Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid Drive

I would put two SSDs - for the system and for data. Given the need to leave about 40% of the space unused, 100 GB is not enough for everything.

My OCZ Vertex 3 has been living for a year now, it doesn't complain. The
choice is yours, I like OCZ, I chose it based on reviews and reviews.

worth taking. I also asked myself such questions at the beginning of this summer and came to the conclusion that we should take it. Indeed, the increase in speed is very noticeable. Windows 7 boots in a few seconds. I store both the system and programs on the Plextor M3, and mostly data on the HDD. I don’t know about durability, since the beginning of summer it hasn’t broken yet :)

Put it and see what and how much it writes, make sure that 7ka works fine, writes little.
