Git squash commits?

Colleagues, I already have some experience with GIT.

At the very beginning of the story, there was a mess, so much so that it is better not to talk about it.

I want to apply squash commits to the entire repository.
To do this, I will ask all my colleagues to commit all their changes, push and remove the repositories locally.
Next, I will create a new develop branch (which is messed up) and apply squash to a number of commits, and then return it to its place (to the origin remote).

In my theory, everything works, in practice it is scary, although I have repeatedly performed squash.
Since I have not done this yet, there are fears that I can mess up.

If it's scary, do it on a test branch first
